THE TRANSPARENCY OF CaF$sub 2$, SrF$sub 2$, AND BaF$sub 2$ CRYSTALS AND THE EFFECT OF HARD RADIATION ON THEM

The transmission of synthetic CaF/sub 2/, SrF/sub 2/, and BaF/sub 2/ single crystals was studied from 0.13 to 13 mu . The effect of gamma radiation on these crystals was also studied. It was discovered that the absorption in the vacuura region of the spectrum had a dual nature in CaF/sub 2/ and SrF/sub 2/ synthetic crystals; the visible coloration of SrF/sub 2/ and of irradiated CaF/sub 2/ crystals is related to their transparency in this part of the spectrum. SrF/sub 2/ and BaF/sub 2/ crystals are more resistant to the effect of hard radiation than CaF/sub 2/ crystals, and green SrF/sub 2/ crystals are discolored by gamma irradiation. (auth)
