The grafting reactions of styrene on poly(methyl methac rylate) preirradiated with Co/sup 60/ gamma rays were studied. The solidified radicals in the platelets of poly(methyl methacrylate) irradiated under vacuum were detected chemically. Their quantity increases with the irradiation dose and then reaches a plateau. On the other hand, the peroxide groups which exist in the polymer before irradiation are destroyed by the irradiation under vacuum. The irradiation of the poly(methyl methacrylate) in the presence of air produces peroxides capable of initiating the polymerization of the styrene. This peroxidation depends to a great extent on the form of the samples used. In the case of a fine powder, the concentration of the peroxide groups increases regularly with the dose; in the case of platelets, the concentration reaches a plateau after several megarads. Likewise, poly(methyl methacrylate) in granules is only difficultly oxidized. (tr-auth)
