A mass spectrometer is designed for rapid analysis of solid-state samples. The spectrometer is Y-shaped, with two of thc arms being ion sources and the other arm an ion collector system; a flap valve is provided for isolating each ion source, and the magnetic field can be reversed from one ion source to the other. Thus, while one ion source is being decontaminated, an analysis can be made on a sample in the other ion source. (D.L.C.)
