DEVELOPMENT OF URANIUM MONONITRIDE. Quarterly Progress Report for October through December 1961

Work in the program showed that UN powder can be hot pressed from 95 to 98% of theoretical density and such material is being used for property measurements. The thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity of UN were determined at 200 to 800 deg C. The conductivity of UN at 750 to 800 deg C is similar to that of UC. The water-corrosion resistance of UN is, however, significantly superior to UC: after 168 hr in 500 deg F deionized and degassed water a UN specimen showed a weight loss as low as 77 mg per cm/sup 2/. The solubility of H in UN was determined at 300 to 800 deg C. Thermal expansion and modulus of elasticity were determined, as well as hot hardness to 2000 deg F. In UN melting and casting studies buttons were prepared under N pressures ranging from 10 to 20 atm with compositions varying between 5.6 to 6.8 wt% N. The higher N content over that previously obtained is attributed in part to the shape of the crucible, which provides for a more uniform melt temperature. The first three of six irradiation capsules containing UN specimens were discharged from the MTR. Evaluation of these specimens is just beginning. (auth)
