A method is proposed for determining effective cross sections for collisions of the second kind, which nonradiatively transfer an atom from a higher to a lower energy level, under gas-kinetic condttions. The method is based on temperature measurement by a generalized line-reversal method. The effective cross section for a collision of the second kind of barium ions with argon atoms is found to be 4 x 10/sup -17/ cm/sup 2/. (auth)
