IRRADIATION CROSS-LINKING OF COPOLYMERS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4793315
Certain vinyl chloride copolymers can be crosslinked by small doses of ionizing radiation, in contrast to the behavior of polyvinyl chloride and its other copolyrners. These copolymers include the high-molecular-weight resinous copolymers of vinyl chloride with 10 to 40% of the following monomersv dialkyl maleates and fumarates in which each alkyl group contains 4 or more C atoms, vinyl esters of fatty acids containing 3 or more C atoms, vinyl alkyl ethers in which the alkyl group contains 18 or more C atoms, alkyl acrylates, and alkyl methacrylates in which the alkyl group contains 3 or more C atoms. The inclusion of a reinforcing filler, e.g., carbon black or silica, renders the irradiated copolymer especially strong at high temperatures. (D.L.C.) (C L fr Pu ro-~
