THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF MULTIPLY SCATTERED $gamma$ RAYS FROM MONODIRECTIONAL Au$sup 198$ Co$sup 60$, AND Na$sup 24$ SOURCES IN WATER (in Russian)
In order to solve the problem of the spatial distribution of a' gamma beam in a medium from a source having a given geometry, the angular and energy distribution from a monodirectional source with various initial gamma -quantum energies must be determined; however, the asymmetrical nature of the distribution curves causes difficulties -in the calculations. For this reason experimental studies were undertaken to determine the spatial distribution in an infinite aqueous medium of the scattered radiation dose rate of collimated Au , Co60, and Na 4 sources. The angles formed between the sxis of the beam and the detector were investigated in the range from 0 to 150 deg while the distance from the collimator to the detector was varied from 9 to 39 cm. From the data collected the attenuation of 2.76, 2.07, 1.25, and 0.411-Mev gamma rays in water was determined for an isotropic source; a similar plot was obtained for the 0.411Mev rays for a flat monodirectional source. With the exception of the 0.411-Mev data, the results agree well with those reported by G. Gol'dshtein (Reactor Shielding Principles, Gosatomizdat, 1961 (In Russian)). Empirical relationships have been derived for the dependence of the angular distribution of the dose on the initial energy of the gamma rays and the distance between the source and the detector.
