The method for nmeasuring the work function of uranium carbide is described. The Zisman modification of the Kelvin vibrating condenser technique is applied to measure the contact potential difference between a clean tungsten reference surface and the uranium carbide cathode. The work function is found to be 3.97 ev. The work function is of importance since uranium carbide has assumed value as a cathode material for use in a thermionic converter. The method for preparing the uranium carbide cathodes is also described. (N.W.R.)
