ASSOCIATED PHOTOPRODUCTION OF POSITIVE K MESONS AND SIGMA HYPERONS FROM HYDROGEN AT 1140 Mev.

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:4792581
The differential cross section for the production of K/sup +/ mesons in the reaction gamma + p yields K/sup +/ + SIGMA /sup 0/ is measured at three angles for 1140-Mev photons that pass through a liquid hydrogen target. K/sup +/ mesons are selected by a magnetic spectrometer. After particles produced at the desired angle and momentum pass through the spectrometer magnet, K/sup +/ mesons are identified by requiring proper pulse heights in several counters situated around an aluminum block in which the K mesons are brought to rest. The contribution to the yield from the process gamma + p -- K/sup +/ + lambda /sup 0/ is determined by lowering the end-point of the bremsstrahlung spectrum below the SIGMA /sup 0/ threshold. Differential cross sections in the center-of-mass system of (0.72 plus or minus 0.10), (1.07 plus or minus 0.18), and (0.53 plus or minus 0.13) x 10/sup -31/ cm/sup 2/ per steradian per photon, at center- of-mass angles for the K meson of 30, 85, and 120 deg respectively, are found. Statistical errors only are included in these results; systematic errors render the absolute cross sections uncertain by an additional 10%. The results on the reaction gamma + p yields K/sup +/ + lambda /sup 0/ tend to strengthen the isotropy of the cross section for this process at energies up to 100 Mev above threshold. A possible interpretation of the results, based on perturbation theory calculations, is presented. (Dissertation Abstr., 22: No. 7, 1962.)
