This review is an introduction to a number of articles in which diverse aspects of the ionizing effect of radiation on matter are treated ln more detall. In the lntroductson a distlnctlon ls made between the atomlc effects and the maorophenomena caused by radlatlon. ln section 2 the atomic phenomena are descrlbed for varlous types of radlation, dependent on the properties of the irradlated material.
