PARTICLE ACCELERATION AND ION YIELD TESTS WITH A CYCLOTRON PROVIDED WITH AN AZIMUTHALLY VARIABLE MAGNETIC FIELD AND WITH ADJUSTABLE ENERGY (in Russian)

Acceleration and ion yield problems were investigated with the help of the 1.5-m cyclotron of the I. V. Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy. The azimuthal variation of the magnetie field was accomplished by means of three 30- mm thick Fe sectors extending under an angle of abont 60 deg , provided with correcting coils. These coils could vary the shape of the magnetic field, shift the won beam in vertical direction without interfering with resonance conditions and correct the first harmonics of the non-homogeneity of the magnetic field. Special screening probes were used for determining the characteristics of the accelerated beams. At an ion current of about 70 microamp, a 31.5-Mev deuteron beam was suceessfully accelerated and taken out of the machine. The energy of the ions could be adjusted in the magnetic field range of 5 to 17 kilooersted. By means of a deflecting system it was found possible to reduce the divergence of the beam witout additional loss of the ion current thus allowing the use of small- aperture magnetic quadrupole lenses. The energy dispersion was found to be about plus or minus 1%. (TTT)
