THE USE OF "PHOENIX" FUEL FOR COMPACT POWER REACTORS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4791772
An investigation was carried out to study the possible use of various plutonium isotope compositions in compaet power reactors. The forced circulation, pressurized water unit design was studied. The reaetivity time variation was calculated along with reactively temperature coefficients. The use of highly recycled Pu/sup 240/, rich in Pu/sup 240/ did not appear to solve the problem of large reactivity mismatches in long-endurance, high power density compact reactors. Such reactors require high initial reactivities and thus U/sup 235/ must be added to offset the adverse effects of Pu/sup 240/ The resulting reactivity-time behavior of such cores was very slmilar to that of U/sup 235/- unshlelded burnable poison systems characterized by pronounced reactivity mismatches.
