EFFECT OF MODERATE DOSES OF GAMMA RADIATION ON THE KEEPING QUALITY OF BILBERRIES (VACCINIUM MYRTILLUS)

Three batches of bilberries (European blueberries) in small polythene bags were treated with various doses of gamma radiation and kept afterwards either at ambient or cool storage temperatures for about 10 to 25 days. The dose of about 0.3 Mrad caused the destruction of somewhat more than 99% of the original microflora (bacteria, yeasts and moulds) and thus increased by 250 to 300% the storage life of berries in comparison with untreated fruit. Losses of anthocyanin pigments, vitamin C, and jellifying power were rather small, and the subsequent changes in flavor were practically non existant. The authors recommend the application of moderate doses of gamma -rays (about 0.3 Mrad) to exported bilberries prior to their shipment. (auth)
