PHASE DIAGRAMS OF TITANIUM ALLOYS WITH RARE EARTH METALS (in German)

An account is given of the results of an investigation of the phase diagrams of titanium alloys with rare-earth metals. All rare-earth metals when alloyed with titanium form the same type of phase diagram. This confirms that the type of phase diagram and the characteristics of the physical-chemical reciprocal effect of the components are determined primarily by the characteristics of their electron stracture. The rare-earth metals prove to be stabilizers for the alpha -phase of titanium and raise slightly the temperature of the polymorphic transformation of titanium. In conformity with the lanthanide contraction the solubility of the rare-eanth metals in titanium increases in the sequence La to Lu. In rare-earth metal-titanium systems no intermetallic bonds are formed despite the significant difference in the electronegativity of the components. There are many transition metals with which the rareearth metals do not form intermetallic bonds, the transition metals of Group VlH of Mendeleeff's Periodic System being an exception to this. The electronegativity factor restricts considerably the mutual solubility of the alloy components. Of all the systems considered it is especially noticeable in the titanium- scandium system that, apart from the favorable structure and volume factor, a fainly limited mutual solubility of the components exists. The presence of aluminum and vanadium in titanium decreases considerably the solubility of cerium and lanthanum in titanium. (auth)
