ELECTRON-SPIN RESONANCE SPECTRA OF ALKYL RADICALS IN $gamma$-IRRADIATED ALKYL HALIDES

Journal Article · · Proc. Chem. Soc.
OSTI ID:4791040
It was shown, by examination of electron spin resonance spectra of gamma irradiated samples of alkyl halides, that parent alkyl radicals are the main species trapped at -- l96 deg . Apart from differences in line width, the hyperfine spectra observed after irradiation depend on the number and relative orientation of the alpha and BETA protons of the alkyl fragment only and are independent of the nature of the attached group R and of the halogen atom in the starting material. It is estimated that the rotons in the radicals observed are in a relatively fixed orientation displaced about l5 deg from one or the other of the two symmetric positions with respect to the p-orbital of the unpaired electron.
