DISCONTINUITY ANALYSIS OF A CYLINDRICAL PRESSURE VESSEL HAVING AN ELLIPSOIDAL HEAD AND A SHORT HEAD-TO-CYLINDER TRANSITION SECTION

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4791007
A pressure vessel with an ellipsoidal head in which the head was made thicker than the cylindrical portion was analyzed to flnd the elastic stresses and deflections at the discontinuities. The area which was studied consists of three shells: a semi-infinite thin-walled cylinder, a thicker ellipsoidal head, and a short transition section between the two which is treated as a cylinder of varying wall thickness. It was assumed that the transition section is short enough for the discontinuity forces at one end to affect those at the other end so that the two junctions must be studied simultaneously. Equations were derived, a sample calculation made, and the discontinuity forces and stresses at each of the junctions were found. (M.C.G.)
