The deuterium--tritium reaction in a metal tube was used as a source of neutrons for continuous and pulsed operation. The possibility of constructing a compact neutron tube furnished with an accelerator is presenied by allowing the ion source and acceleration system to work under the same gas pressure. An improved Renning-source was used. In order to keep the gas pressure in the neutron tube constant, the tube contained a small zirconium wire saturated with heavy hydrogen and bearing an electric potential. By varying the temperature of the wire and consequently the absorption and release of hydrogen the gas pressure could easily be adjusted. The neutron tube produces 2 x 10/sup 8/ neutrons/sec in continuous operation and neutron impulses of 3 x l0/sup 10/ neutron/sec maximum. (M.C.G.)
