An experimental study of radiation thermal cracking was carried out with 200 to 350 deg and 190 to 325 deg kerosene-gas oil fractions in the liquid phase at temperatures ranging from 300 to 400 deg C in a radiation field of a water-moderated reactor. The fractions were studied under static conditions in order to determine the basic mechanism of radiation thermal cracking. The results were verified under dynamic conditions on a circulation loop located in an experimental hole of the reactor. lt was determined that the conversion of liquid hydrocarbons proceeds in three stages: pure radiolysis, radiation thermal cracking, and regular thermal cracking. In pure radiolysis the conversion rate below the 3l0 to 330 deg C range changes only slightly with rise in temperature and the predominant processes are those of recombination of radicals formed under the effect of radiation. In radiation thermal cracking the conversion sets in at ~310 deg C with an abrupt change in the rate and direction of the radiation thermal cracking indicated by a change in -the radiochemical yields and the composition of the gases and high-boiling residues. Destructive processes, similar to those taking place in thermal cracking, play an important role in the 3l0 to 330 deg C range. Rapid decomposition of radicals with rupture of C--C bonds, indicated by an increase of methane and a decrease of hydrogen content in the gaseous radiolysis products, occurs above 330 deg C. With a further rise in temperature, radiation thermal cracking changes gradually to regular thermal cracking. lt is concIuded that radiation thermal cracking effects greater conversion of the raw material than pure radiolysis and that the relationships between the chemical processes are quite different from those in regular thermal cracking.
