THE INDUCTION MELTING AND CASTING OF BERYLLIUM

Journal Article · · J. Less-Common Metals
A study was made of the defects normally found in vacuum-cast, induction melted beryllium ingots. The defects were classified according to metal source, and the extent to which they may be eliminated is shown to be dependent upon conditions of casting, such as teeming temperature, rate of pour, and pre- treatment of the raw material. A center-line defect, present in certain grades of thermally-reduced metal may result from the segregation of titanium, and appears to be removed by alloying with aluminum. (auth)
