A PRELIMINARY EXPERIMENT ON THE PHOTOPRODUCTION OF $omega$$sup 0$ MESONS FROM HYDROGEN

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4790203
An attempt was made to measure meson ( omega /sup 0/) photoproduction from hydrogen. The counting rate of recoil protons from a liquid hydrogen target at fixed laboratory angle and momentum as a function of end-point energy of the bremsstrahlung beam from the Caltech electron synchrotron was investigated. The appearance of a step in the courting rate at the treshold energy for a particle of mass near 790 Mev superimposed on the continuous distribution of protons from single pi /sup 0/ and multiple pi production would be considered as evidence for the reaction lambda + p yields p + omega /sup 0/. The beam monitoring fluctuations were about 0.6%, and the high counting rate runs showed neither systematic changes nor fluctuations larger than expected statistically. A threshold energy of 1250 Mev for a mass 790 Mev particle produced at 120- in the center-of-mass system was expected. Results showed that the likelihood ratio for there being a step at 1240 Mev to there not being a step is 20 : 1. Although the data were by no means conclusive, if the minimum of chisquare at 1240 Mev indicated that a particle of mass 784 plus or minus 9 Mev is photoproduced, then the cross section would be 0.37 plus or minus 0.16 mu b/sr.
