THE EFFECTS OF FEEDING IRRADIATED FLOUR TO DOGS. II. REPRODUCTION AND PATHOLOGY
>Groups of two male and two female beagle dogs were fed a complete ration of which 35% of the total solids was nonirradiated flour (FO) or flour irradiated with 37,200 (FX) or 74,400 (F2X) rads. The dogs were fed the rations during a 104-week period. There was no statistically significant difference in the initial weight, weight gained, or feed consumed between the dogs fed irradiated flour and those fed nonirradiated flour. All the females and males were fertile. The bitches whelped 21, 13, and 16 pups and weaned 9, 1, and 5 pups in the FO, FX, and F2X groups, respectively. Including irradiated flour in a ration fed to dogs had no apparent effect on the blood level of hemoglobin, nor on red blood cell, white blood cell, or differential white blood cell counts as compared to the blood values of the dogs fed nonirradiated flour. Thyroid lesions increased with increasing level of irradiation, but the data are too few to achieve statistical significance. Flour irradiated with 74,400 rads is wholesome since including it in a ration fed to dogs had no significant detrimental effect on the basis of the criteria used in this experiment. (auth)
