The calculation of the long-term reactivity of reactors is ondy possible with great mathematical efforts; since the burn-up (including conversion and poisoning) is dependent on the neutron flux and on the concentration of the fuel components, which are both variable with regard to time and space, and the fuel charging required for an operation with constant reactor power depends on its part in a complicated manner on the burn-up. The results of the calculation of the burn-up show that the fuel charging reaches a stationary state after a short period of operation. The speed of charging is then constant, the distribution of concentration of the fuel components in the core, the neutron flux etc. are frozen. The two characteristic values of the fuel charging, the speed of charging in the beginning of the operation and in the stationary state, can be represented by means of simple formulas, which can be numerically evaluated without using an electronic computer. It is shown how these formulas are derived from the general formalism of the burn-up calculation, which represents a nonlinear, time-dependent, mixed initial and boundary value problem with non- constant boundaries. Furthermore formulas for an elementary application are given for the maximum neutron dose of the fuel in the reactor and for the stationary local distribution of the neutron dose and neutron flux. The distribution of the fuel components in the reactor, e.g. that of the fissile material, the bred plutonium, the fission products etc., can be calculated from the distribution of the neutron dose, which characterize the burn-up, conversion, and poisoning.
