RADIATN-HEAT SPRAY CALCINATION STUDIES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4789254
The design and operation of the hot-cell calciner and its associated equipment are described. The operation is on a continuous basis and is applied to the fixation of radioactive waste in a stable solid medium. The calcination method is applied to Purex Process waste. The equipment can be operated in a shielded cell either as a spray calciner or as a pot caliner in order to test waste calcination with actual, full-level wastes. Several cold runs will be made to study calcination characteristics of the radioactive waste, associated off-gas treatment problems, thermal properties of the waste calcine, and operation techiques and problems.
