The paramagnetic resonance spectra of irradiated synthetic films of poly- gamma -methyl-L-glutamate with both alpha -helix and disarranged forms of polypeptide chain, and of various proteins were studied. ln a vacuum, undenatured proteins and films having the alpha -helix form gave a doublet APR signal, which in air became transformed into a singlet. In proteins denatured by heat, and in disordered polypeptide films, after irradiation in vacuum, a doublet paramagnetic resonance spectrum is formed, which does not change in air. The results can be explained by the existence in the proteins and in the films of a regular system of peptide-hydrogen bonds, in the undenatured substances, and by the destruction of this system by denaturation.
