INELASTIC PROTON-PROTON SCATTERING AT 1.3 BEV

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4788058
The third external proton beam of the Cosmotron was impinged on a liquid hydrogen target. Protons scattered at a fixed angle were momentum-analyzed wlth a magnet spectrometer. The three angles studied were 2.37, 3.38, and 4.30 deg , at incident proton kinetic energles of 1.355, 1.35l, and 1.384 Bev respectively. The momentum resolution given by the width of the elastic peak amounted to 2.3 to 4% The inelastic prtoon spectrum showed clear evidence of the (3,3) resonance in pi -p scattering. Calculations of the differential cross section per unit solid angle and momentum were made on the basis of isobar production by the one-pion exchange between the colliding protons, followed by isotropic decay of the isobar. Good agreement was obtained between measured and calculated spectra. This was considered to be evidence of the important role played by the peripheral interaction in single pion production by p-p collisions at 1.3 Bev. (auth)
