LONGITUDINAL POLARIZATION OF BISMUTH$sup 210$ BETA PARTICLES

Journal Article · · Dissertation Abstr.
OSTI ID:4787385
The longitudinal polarization of Bi/sup 210/ BETA particles was determined as a function of energy using the double Mottscattering method. Corrections for depolarization effects were made using theoretical calculations and by comparison of results obtained for P/sup 32/ with the same apparatus. Scattering asymmetry was determined for five energy groups within (0.449 to 0.798) v/c. The electron polarization was measured as (0.53 to 0.77) plus or minus 0.06 and (0.59 to 0.66) plus or minus 0.055, in units of v/c, for v/c centered at 0.71 and 0.80 respectively, including corrections for scatterer and source depolarizations. The electron polarization for the three lower energies could not be calculated due to the non-applicability of the formulas. The results were consistent with time-reversal invariance within a phase angle of + 3 to 0DE.
