IRRADIATION-INDUCED GRAFT POLYMERIZATION ONTO CELLULOSE ACETATE
Results of graft polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) or styrene onto cellulose acetate (with an acetyl content of 52.8%) obtained from several methods using a 1500-c Co/sup 60/ gamma -ray source are discussed. With the preirradiation method. cellulose acetate was irradiated in the presence of air, and the quantity of peroxides formed increased linearly with increasing dosage and graft polymerization was initiated when AN heated up to 100 deg C. With the frozen radical method, a graft efficiency of 0.7 to 0.8 was obtained. With the mutual graft polymerization method, only a small dosage was needed; however, the efficiency was very low, especially in the case of AN. The structures of the graft polymers were studied by saponification and successive extraction of the homopolymer formed. Approximately. 38% of the grafted polystyrene was bound to the acetyl groups of the cellulose acetate. (OID)
