A process is given for the separation of Zr and Hf by soivent extraction. The process comprises distributing the chlorides of Zr and Hf between an aqueous solution of chioride ions and a liquid halogenated hydrocarbon containing an organic amine of medium molecular weight. The process has the advantages that repeated extractions may be carried out and that Zr oxychloride may be directly used. (D.L.C.)
