IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO ARTIFICIAL SHAPED STRUCTURES

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4786731
A process is given for producing structures composed of spongy and reticulated polymeric fibers. The process comprises the steps of subjecting a plexifilament formed from a linear polyethylene or polypropylene to ionizing radiation while in intimate contact with an unsaturated organic acid, e.g., acrylic or methacrylic acid. After the irradiation and grafting, the acid groups may be converted into salt groups and the resulting plexifilaments used to make fabrics and paper. (D.L.C.)
