SURFACE BURST OF 100 TON TNT HEMISPHERICAL CHARGE (1961) PROJECT NO. 4 THERMAL MEASUREMENTS
Technical Report

OSTI ID:4786722
The radiant flux from an exploding charge of 100 tons of TNT was recorded in selected color bands using high speed bolometers and photocells with appropriate filters. Thermoelectric calorimeters were used to measure the total radiant energy emitted. The heat pulse exhibited an initial maximum of radiant intensity followed by a minimum at about 2 ms after detonation and a second maximum at about 20 ms. Surface temperatures fo the fireball were calculated from the observed spectral distribution of energy. The maximum temperature decreased until at late times it was 2500 deg K characteristic of burning detonation products. There was no minimum of temperature. Two different types of instruments viewing different sides of the fireball gave the thermal yield as 3.8% and 6.6% of the total energy yield of the explosion. (auth)
