EQUATIONS OF STATE OF GRANITE AND SALT. Final Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4786549

The determination of the low-amplitude portions of the Hugoniot equntions of state of two rocks, a quartz monzonite porphyryl (granite) and rock salt, is described. In the experiments the shock-wave velocity and the free- surface velocity produced on reflection of the shock from a free boundary were measured. These, together with a relation between free-surface velocity and particle velocity prior to reflection, are sufficient to determine the stress- densityenergy state behind the shock wave. A series of measurements with different shock intensities thus determines the Hugoniot equation of state, or locus of states attainable through a single shock transition. (M.C.G.)
