Hyperfine Structure Splitting of Recoilless γ Lines. III. The 84-Kev Level in Yb170 (in German)

Nuclear resonance absorption was detected in the 84-kev level of Y170 with the help of the Mossbauer effect. By measurement of the resonance absorption as a function of the Doppler displacement between a Tm170 metal source and a Yb2O3 absorber at 20 deg a hyperfine structure splittinB of the 84-kev level was observed. The half life of the 84-kev level was measured at 1.5 plus or minus 0.2 x 10-9 sec from a resolved resoannce line. The splitting can be explained by a quadrupole interaction in the Yb2O3.
