STUDY OF CHEMICAL GOLD SENSITIZATION OF NUCLEAR EMULSIONS

The possibility of increasing the sensitivity of nuclear emulsions by the use of gold sodium thiocyanate solutions was studied and the following results were obtalned: The sensitizing effect of the complex gold sodium thiocyanate is dependent on the ratio of the sodium thiocyanate and gold chloride concentrations in the sensitizing solution. In the beginning, a sensitivity increase was noted and then after passage through a maximum decrease. At high concentration ratios of sodium thiocyanate to gold chloride, a recrystallization of silver halide occurs during the chemical aging in the emulsion. This recrystallization occurs because of the high solubility of some silver halide crystals in NaCNS. The effect of the NaCNS on the sensitivity of the emulsions sensitized by gold sodium thiocyanate was affected by the gelatin used. The curves of the dependence of the sensitivity on the concentration of the complex gold sodium thiocyanates indicate certain maximum attainable limiting values. The sensitizing effect of the gold salts can be increased by the addition of some organic scintillators. A suitable substance for this is, for example, l-phenyl-2- methyl-3,5-bis dimethyl-aminosty rylpyraz olium iodide. The increase of the sensitizing effect of the gold salts by this compound depends on the aging stage at which the addition is made. For the combined sensitization of nuclear emulsions by gold salts and organic compounds, 2-p-dimethylaminostyryl- benzthiasol can not be used; emulsion layers sensitized in this manner are quite cloudy after development. The experimental dependencies obtained were explained in agreement with the present concepts on the mechanism for the sensitization of emulsions with gold salts. (tr-auth)
