Isotopic boron composition of certain boron minerals

Possible variation in the natural boron isotopic abundance was investigated by analyzing seven boron minerals from various parts of the world. The samples were treated to yield sodium tetraborate with a 100% recovery of the boron, and the tetraborate was analyzed with a surface ionization mass spectrometer. The B11/B10 ratio was found to vary from 3.922 for an Argentinian sample to 4.141 for a Russian sample. It is suggested that the variation may be due to chemical effects. (D.L.C.)
