The 180-ton pressure vessel for Garigliano was fabricated from forged components in preference to welded plate. The vessel is described along with the forging process and the qualitative results. The principal advan tages of using forged components are elimination of longitudinal welded joints, 40% reduction of total welding length, greater construction accuracy, and simpler design. The advantages more than compensate for the 10% cost difference in using forged components instead of welded plates. (N.W.R.)
