A RAPID ELECTROLYTIC METHOD FOR THE PREPARATION OF METALLOGRAPHIC SURFACES ON FABRICATED BERYLLIUM

Journal Article · · J. Inst. Metals
OSTI ID:4786258
A method described for the preparation of metallographic surfaces on fabricated beryllium is essentially an electrolytic process whereby a relatively strain-free surface, responding readily to polarized light, can be prepared easily and quickly on rolled or machined surfaces in either ingot or powder products. From the as-received condition, the specimen is preferably (though not necessarily) rough polished on two silicon carbide papers and electropolished on a modifted Disa Electropol apparatus for 45 min. The electrolyte is composed of 3 vol phosphoric acid, 1 vol sulfuric acid, 1 vol glycol, and 1 vol alcohol. The total time for the process is approximately 1 h and involves complete attention of the operator for only 15 min. (P.C.H.)
