The application of electron-beam floating-zone-melting methods to the purification of refractory metals is examined. Systems used and results obtained in the zone melting of Mo, Mo--Ta, Mo--W, and Mo--Nb are outlined. The floating- zone methods are compared with other electron-bombardment methods, viz., solid- state outgassing, melting on a cooled hearth, and drip melting. Results obtained with the cooled-hearth method on U and Nb are summarized. (T.F.H.)
