MATERIALS FOR HIGH TEMPERATURE NUCLEAR ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS. Quarterly Report No. 1, August 15, 1961-April 1, 1962
In silica investigations, devitrification curves were run with fused samples. The devitrification rate was found to be lower with graphite mold releases, also, better handling characteristics were found with these releases. The effects of the firing atmosphere on the properties of slip cast fused silica were investigated. The rupture modulus was greater than 5400 psi at 2000 deg F for steam-fired samples compared with 4200 psi for those fired in air. Alumina bars cast with vibration and pressure fired at 2250 deg F showed an air displacement porosity of 28.1% and a modulus of rupture of 17,000 psi. In Al-U/ sub 3/O/sub 8/ reaction tests it was found that with increasing Al content the ignition became less violent with an accompanying decrease in temperature. Analytical results indicated 95% reaction of the Al in 14.6 wt% Al thermets. Residual U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ was indicated in reactions involving U3O0 of a particle size greater than 140 mesh. Electron microprobe analyses of fired Al-U/sub 3/O/ sub 8/ thermets showed the presence of UO/sub 2/, UAl/sub 2/, and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/. Reactions of 7.9 wt% 325-mesh Be with U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ appeared more vigorous than the corresponding
