The distribution of colloidal Y/sup 90/ following intratumoral and intracavitary administration in the form of Y/sup 90/ + Fe(OH)/sub 3/ was studied, using normal and Yoshida-sarcomabearing rats and Ehrlich-ascites-bearing mice. Colloidal Y/sup 980/ injected intramuscularly and intratumorally, remained for over 90% at the injection site for a long time. After intracavitary administration, Y/sup 90/ remained locally in the injected cavity. The Yoshida- sarcoma tumors, transplanted subcutaneously, were treated by interstitial injection of colloidal Y/sup 90/, and tumoricidal effects were observed in 10 out of 14 cases. Six clinical cases of superficial malignant tumors were treated with good effect, in 5 cases by injection of colloidal Y/sup 90/ interstitially. Y/sup 90/ was used in the treatment of 21 cases of malignant effusions (14 pleural and 7 peritoneal); of the 14 patients, 10 showed good control of the fluid, and 3 showed no improvement of the disease. The seven cases were treated intraperitoneally with poor results. (Abstr. Japan Med., 2, No. 2, Feb. 1962).
