CVTR PRESSURE TUBE FITTING DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT. Topical Report
The CVTR contains 372 primary loop joints in the core portion of the plant. A design aim of one pound leakage/ year/joint was established because of the high cost of heavy water, the large number of joints, and accelerated erosion of joints with higher leak rates. After parallel consideration of seal welded closures and several varieties of gasketed closures, a closure design based upon the Marman Conoseal gasket was selected. Connections utilizing this gasket were also developed for joining the Zircaloy and stainless steel portions of the pressure tube and the U-bend. An extensive test program was carried out which proved the effectiveness and reliability of the Conoseal design. (auth)
