EFFECT OF X-RAY IRRADIATION ON THE STRUCTURE OF CRYSTALS OF NaCl TYPE

Journal Article · · Soviet Phys.-Cryst. (English Transl.)
OSTI ID:4784779
Using the methods of anomalous scattering and selective etching, an investigation was made of the defects occurring in single crystals of NaCl, KCl, and LiF exposed to x radiation. The changes in structure were qualitatively analogous to the changes in structure appearing in crystals exposed to neutron radiation. Point-type defects were produced, distributed in a statistically random manner in the body of the crystal. The surface of the irradiated crystals showed cavities of rectangular form, bounded by STA100! faces, and evidently formed by accumulations of vacancies. Two-dimensional disturbances oriented along the STA100! and possibly STA130! planes appeared in the irradiated crystals. (F.C.H.)
