A process for the extraction of U from solutions comprises contacting the solutions under acid conditions with polymers containing repeated units with ortho hydroxy aromatic carboxylic acid functions. These polymers are simple to prepare, e.g., by condensation of salicylic acid with formaldehyde using oxalic acid as catalyst, and can be used in ion exchange column form. Several examples are given of the preparation of such polymers and their use in separating U from ores. (D.L.C.)
