THE O$sup 16$(n,p)N$sup 16$ CROSS SECTION FROM 12.6 TO 16.3 Mev

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4783432
The cross section for the reaction O/sup 16/(n,p)N/sub 16/ was measured in the neutron energy range 12.6 < E/sub n/ < 16.3 Mev. Neutrons were produced by the T(d,n)He/sup 4/ reaction, using 800-kev deuterons from a Cockcroft-Walton accelerator. A triple-coincidence proton-recoil neutron spectrometer was used to measure the absolute neutron yield from the tritium target as a function of angle. An oxygenbearing liquid scintillator was bombarded in an annular ring concentric with the incident deuteron beam. After bombardment, the scintillant was - transferred to a shielded photomultiplier assembly where the BETA decay of the 7.36sec N/sup 16/ activity was observed. Absolute cross sections were obtained at intervals of 0 kev over the energy range mentioned above. Neutron energy spreads at each point ranged from plus or minus 40 to plus or minus 120 kev. Peaks in the excitation function were resolved at energies of 13.50 plus or minus 0.10, 14.10 plus or minus 0.10, and 15.10 plus or minus 0.05 Mev. By using the results of DeJuren, et al., in conjunction with the results of this experiment, it was found that the integral of the O/sup 16/(n,p)N/sup 16/ excitation function over the Watt fission spectrum is 99.5 mu b.
