A STUDY OF THE $beta$-DECAY OF Pa$sup 234$(UZ)

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics

The 6.7-hr Pa/sup 234/(UZ) was separated from 24-day Th/sup 234/ and sources of 2 mu c and less were prepared for the 6-gap beta spectrometer. The continuous beta and conversion-line spectra were measured. Numerous gamma spectra were recorded in coincidence with beta , gamma , and conversion electrons, using a NaI scintillation spectrometer in connection with the beta spectrometer. Fifty-one conversion lines were found and 32 gamma transitions are established. The occurrence of a delayed state, populated in about 1/3 of all decays, with a lifetime longer than 2 x 10/sup -7/ sec, is demonstrated. A decay scheme comprising 16 excited states is proposed, which is consistent with results of combined measurements. In addition to the ground-state rotational band, the scheme exhibits a band built on a level at 922 kev, which may be identified as the gamma vibrational band. (auth)
