QUENCHING AND ADSORPTION IN LIQUID SCINTILLATION COUNTING

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4782684
ABS>The possibility of increasing the counting efficiency for carbon-14 in a coincidence liquid scintillation system by optimizing the voltages on the photomultipliers for all concentrations of quenching agent is demonstrated. A similar effect is not observed for tritium. Am increase in count rate was observed, under optimum conditions, when small concentrations of quenching agent (benzoic acid) were added to a phosphor solution containing carbon-14 labeled adipic acid. This was shown to be due to desorption of the active specimen, part of which was adsorbed on the walls of the counting phial. Some of the practical aspects of optimization and adsorption are discussed. (auth)
