NUCLEAR REACTOR WITH AN INTERSPACE PROVIDED BETWEEN THE THERMAL INSULATION AND THE BIOLOGICAL SHIELDING

In most reactors an interspaee is provided between the outer surface of the pressure vessel or a thermal insulation covering the outer surface and the biological shielding. Generally this interspace is kept at a pressure lower than the pressure in the regions of the reactor building frequented by the operators, so that gas activated by neutrons and escaped from the core cannot enter the frequented regions. The activity of the gas in this interspace induces an additional irradiation dose in the regions. In order to limit the additional dose, the boundary surface of the interspace is eovered with a neutron absorbing layer. Preferably the top layer of the thermal insulation or the innermost layer of the biological shielding may be constituted by a strong neutron absorber. By these measures a great part of the thermal neutrons escaping the pressure vessel as well as the thermal neutrons created in the shielding by moderation are absorbed in these layers, so that the activation of the gas in the interspace is reduced.
