Thesis submitted to Universite, Paris. The mechanism and the optimum conditions for preparing UN were studied. The resuits were used for hot pressing (250 kg/cm/, l000 deg C, under vacuum) a mixture of powders of U and higher U nitrides. The products obtained were identified by x-ray measurements and may be either UN, or alpha U-UN depending on conditions. As revealed by the curved shape of grain boundaries, the sinters obtained do not easily evolve toward physico-chemical equilabrium when submitted to heat treatment. This behavior is quite different from the one observed with UN prepared by a similar method. This fact may be ascribed to the insolubility in the matrix UN of particles of UO/ being present as impurities. The density, hardness, and thermal conductivity of these products are higher than those measured on UN or U-UN cermets obtained by other methods. (auth)
