Hydrogen peroxide is a stable radiolytic product, and the radicals H, OH, and HO/sub 2/ are short-lived radiolytic products. It was shown experimentally that no deaths resulted on suspending paramecium for 4 hours in a solution containing 9,5 gamma /ml of H/sub 2/O/sub 2/. Pretreatment of paramecium with a weak H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ solution did not change its sensitivity to irradiation. However, by carrying out the irradiation of paramecium in a previously irradiated medium or in the presence of H/sub 2/O/sub 2/, it was possible to increase the reaction time of the shont-lived radicals on the paramecium due to the following radical reactions: H + H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ yields H/sub 2/O + OH; OH + H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ yields H/sub 2/O + HO/sub 2/, HO/sub 2/ + H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ yields H/sub 2/O + O/sub 2/ + OH and O/sub 2/ + H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ yields O/sub 2/ + OH/sup -/ + OH. Experiments were c arried out in order to test this hypothesis. A dose of 50 kr was given to 300 paramecia in 0.3 ml of a previously irradiated medium (50 kr) which contained 5.1 gamma /ml of H/sub 2/O/ sub 2/ (the final H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ content was 8.5 gamma /ml after the irradiation). A dose of 100 kr was given to 300 paramecia in 0.3 ml of a freshly prepared culture medium. A dose of 50 kr was given to 300 paramecia in 0.3 ml of a H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ solution containing 5 gamma / ml (final H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ content was 8.56 gamma /ml). A dose of 100 kr was imparted to 300 paramecia in 0.3 ml of a fresh, culture medium. The final H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ content in the experiments with 100 kr doses was 8.38 gamma /ml. The results showed that a lower irradiation dose of 50 kr, where the solutions contained H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ formed by irradiation or added to the solution, gave lower survivals of 58.0 and 67.5% respectively, as compared to survivals of 83.5 and 85.4% in experiments where the dose was twice as high (100 kr) in a fresh, culture medium. Addition of peroxide to a medium results in a significant increase in the lethal effect of the short-lived radiolytic products. (TTT)
