INTERIM REPORT ON THE PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL METALLURGY OF APM M-257

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4781885
The physical and mechanical metallurgy of APM M-257 and XAP-001 is reported. Tensile data for M-257 sheet, bar, and tubing were somewhat scattered at room temperature, and became more uniform at elevated temperatures. The strength values for all three forms were in fairly good agreement, The yield strengths of sheet materiai increased slightly with increasing strain rate. The tenstle propenties of M-257 sheet were not significantly affected by soaking treatments at 800 and 1000 deg F for periods up to 5000 hours. The tensile and creep properties of XAP-001 bar stock compared favorably with earlier data on M- 257. Limited data indicated that M-257 is not notch sensitive. Burst tests performed on M-257 tubing showed that the ultimate hoop strengths were slightly lower than the ultimate tensile strengths. XAP-001 exhibits an improved microstructvre compared to earlier M-257, although efforts for further improvement are recommended. (auth)
