HASTELLOY X FORCED CONVECTION NaK CORROSION LOOP TESTS, HXLM-1 AND 2

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4781825
To obtain information on the corrosion resistance of Hastelloy X to NaK, two type 316 stainless steel test loops with Inconel pump cells were modified to incorporate Hastelloy X heater legs. Each loop contained a heater and cooler section so that temperature gradients could be established in the NaK in the direction of flow. By-pass type cold traps were installed in the minimum temperature zones of the loops and were maintained at 700 to 750 deg F to remove oxide contamination. HXLM-1 and HXLM-2 were operated for 500 and 576 hr respectively while maintaining maximum temperatures of 1510 and 1500 deg F. Minimum temperatures were 1100 deg F. Post-test analysis revealed 1.7 and 1.5 mils surface and subsurface void attack in the Hastelloy X heater legs while the stainless steel coolers showed a depleted layer of 1 mil. The loops contained 4.5 and 5.0 mils of mass transfer deposit. (auth)
